'Naval Attack' before land attack

The British thought they would send Russians ammunition to help there allies. In February 1915 the British naval force sent ships to mount an attack on the Dardanelles. They used eighteen war ships. The Turks laid minefields and anti-submarine nets. The British boats went from eighteen to twelve. Three were sunk and three were disabled. They retreated. But what the British didn't realise was that they would have got through had they kept going because the turks had run out of fire power. 

This meaning they could have stopped the war and stopped the deaths at Gallipoli too.

Land ATTACK:

The landing at Gallipoli was important because the ANZACs needed to invade it so the Turkish would surrender and the ANZACs could move further up the coast.

The landing was caused by the British ships retreating from the Dardanelles.

Why NZ went to war?

New Zealanders (Pakeha) originally came from Britian. So most New Zealanders thought of
Britian as the mother land. New Zealand had a relationship with Britian when they signed the Treaty of Waitangi. Ever since the Treaty they have had a tight relationship. Most soldiers who singed up
thought of war as an oporurtunity to travel the world. A great Adventure. Also New Zealanders wanted to there bit for King George V. Some were so eager to go to war, that they lied about their age, so they where able to sign up. The people of New Zealand felt great pride for those that went to war.

ANZAC Intergrated Unit

This week we are intergrating curriculum areas to study and learn about events at Gallipoli. Students will blog aspects we look at to show their understanding of what we read, reseach and dicover. Large group and whole class discusions are playing an important part of helping us understand this war.

As a school we will remember the ANZACs by holding our own service at 9.10 on Friday morning. You are welcome to join us.  We will be placing a cross for an ANZAC,  who we will research to find out more about.

Blue Skies in Kaiapoi. A huge thank you to the wonderful mums that came along for the day and worked with the groups through their activities.

It was wonderful to see the students challenged. When they felt, out of their comfort zone, they didn't give up. All students responded extremely well to the challenges in front of them. Pushing themselves beyond fear to attempt difficult tasks. Working as a team, listening to each other for ideas and solutions to problems faced were some of the many skills gained. Communication was so important. It was a valuable experience for me to see our creative thinkers, hard workers and leaders as they emerged throughout different tasks. 

We had an AWESOME day.
